Leading Up to the Break

Hi Blog!

It’s almost time for Thanksgiving break. I am so excited to go home to Miami for the break. Before heading to Miami, I’m going to Los Angeles to meet with my family. Fortunately, Wellesley allowed us to go off-campus for the Thanksgiving break, but once we get back we’ll have three days of virtual classes so everyone can quarantine.

This week was very productive for working on my final papers before the break. I specifically started working on finding sources and began writing my final paper for my Africana studies course. For the paper, I’m taking an interdisciplinary approach to examine the economic costs of the practice of enslaving Africans. It’s a very interesting topic where most economists have found that the enslavement of Africans was an inefficient and not viable option. There’s only one source that argues that it was an efficient and economically viable system—and I will primarily be refuting this claim.

In addition to working on my final paper, I spent a lot of this week working for my job on campus. I am a student philanthropy chair so I call alumnae to provide updates on student life and ask if they would like to renew their gift to the Wellesley Fund. The fund facilitates a lot of financial aid, campus beautification, and many other things. This week, the fund hosted its day of giving which was a campaign where we attempted to bring together 450 donors to support the college. We exceeded this goal and were able to bring together over 800 donors. The day of giving was specifically on Thursday and we ordered food to keep us fueled as we called alumnae. It was so much fun to work towards our goal as a team and end up being very successful.

Best,

Lynsey
