Zoom Networking Meetings #1 and #2

Networking Meeting #1: Alan J., Technology Consultant – February 5, 2021

I met with Alan J. one Friday afternoon for a Zoom coffee chat to learn more about his early career path out of college and into the company. Alan is currently a Technology Consultant, where he handles key strategic accounts and fosters the client relationship. I reached out to Alan because I found similarities in our non-traditional path into tech. He majored in neuroscience and financial economics in college, while I majored in English and Chinese. In addition, he is proficient in Shanghainese – the dialect of Shanghai, where I had planned to study and work abroad.

During our conversation, we talked about his first role at the company, and how he was able to realize new interests that eventually led him to consulting. We also talked about his experiences at both headquarters, and the many aspects that he enjoys about the company, which include the work-life balance and the structure provided working at a large company. We wrapped up our Zoom meeting with lessons he learned in the earlier stages of his career journey. One key takeaway he left me with was the value of figuring out my goals early on, and mapping out how to reach them.

It was lovely meeting Alan and learning from his reflections on the past four years of his career journey. Next, I’ll be meeting with Michelle Z., who is a recent Babson alum and has just begun her career.

Networking Meeting #2: Michelle Z., Product Specialist – February 10, 2021

For my second networking meeting, I reached out to Michelle Z., who recently graduated from Babson. I noticed we shared a lot in common – more than just our name! We’re both interested in design and business strategy, we’re both from Southern California, and we’re both starting our careers in the same role. It was really valuable to hear from Michelle and learn more about what I’ll be doing in several months! The role is a one-year launching point into the company, designed to build a strong technical understanding of the software. Product Specialists help clients overcome any roadblocks when building complex surveys.

Michelle shared with me her experiences starting her first full-time role remotely, and what it’s like working with her new teammates via Zoom. In addition, we connected over our shared experience of feeling the pressure to land a “wow-factor” job right out of college. (By “wow-factor” job, we mean extremely coveted positions at top consulting firms or top tech companies.) We’re both incredibly appreciative of the opportunities we have at the company, especially since we aim to break into tech from non-technical backgrounds.

I had such a great time talking and laughing with Michelle! Next, I’ll be meeting with Elaine L., who is nearly two years into her role as a User Experience (UX) Designer.
