HEAT STAKING
Benefits:
・Impossible to separate the pieces=sturdy!
・Smooth surface
・No other material needed and not additional measurements needed
Drawbacks:
・Cannot separate the pieces
・The connected part has to be a right angle
・The whole piece might break randomly when dropped
・Melts a bit of the surrounding plastic so measurements will be off
Useful when:
・Making a children’s toy =smooth attachment
・Building the square/rectangle base of whatever project
PIANO WIRE
Benefits:
・Could bend it and move the pieces
・Can be attached with only a small amount of area
・Can separate the pieces after this method
Drawbacks:
・You need two types of materials
・Because you need the tight press at one end and the clearance press at the other, it is a bit of a work compared to the other two methods
・Not that sturdy for attachment of two pieces
Useful when:
・creating model doors
・pinning down pieces
・when your materials are thin plastic
SLOTS/PEGS
Benefits:
・Very easy to construct
・Reusable
・Re-attachable
・Can change use of the slots/pegs by changing how loose and tight the fit is
Drawbacks:
・Need just the right length for loose, snug, tight fits
・A lot of measurements
・Only right angle can be tightly connected
Useful when:
・Building the square/rectangle base of whatever project
・Building a easy model of your project, because it is re-attachable
BUSHINGS
Loose fit: Can become the wheel, what moves the object
Tight fit: Can become the grip, what stops the object
FROM WORKSHEET:
After comparing the dimensions with the SolidWorks and the actual lengths, yes there is a discrepancy because of the laser that melts and cuts a bit into the plastic. Therefore, if you want a very tight fit, you should take this into account and make the slot a bit larger or the peg ad bit smaller.
Your blog is very well organized it’s very easy to read.
Your drawing on the bushing section is really clearly labeled and very helpful.
