This mechanism works by rotating the rounded triangular shape with the axis at a corner, as the triangle rotates, the box containing the triangle moves up and down as the axis rotates the triangle. I was interested in this particular mechanism because when I think of building a mechanism I never think of making something somewhat irregular shaped like the triangle above. It’s not something that I would come up with. I imagine how this mechanism could be used in a car’s engine or a garlic smasher, just attach a motor at the axis, add a hammer head on the bottom and put some garlic under it. It definitely is a mechanism that could have many applications
I looked at this device too! I love how the irregular shapes of the triangle help in keeping a non-constant speed of motion in the device. One thing I was puzzled by was how to triangle maintains its place and how it doesn’t fall off.
I like your idea of using this mechanism as a garlic smasher! Going off of your idea I started to think of other similar applications it might have in the kitchen like tenderizing meat.
