When we make a statement about a tragic local or world event on behalf of ourselves, our department, or our campus, we often do so with our institutional mission and values in mind.  We wonder when it’s appropriate to issue a statement.  We hope that making a statement will make a positive difference and that it will not be hurtful or harmful.  Those of us with expertise in specific disciplines might be consulted for some important insights and might be able to discern nuance and/or add context.

Aligning statements with Wellesley’s mission of Non Ministrari sed Ministrare, which highlights a dedication to service and leadership, is a helpful guideline.  Equally important is the following stated value: “Connection and Community:  We value the equal dignity of every member of the community and our sustained connection to one another, to our campus, and to our mission.”

These statements of mission and values are hugely important and remind us that our connection with one another and with the world at large is fragile, crucial and must be cultivated.  I hope that our campus can keep these precious goals in mind as we navigate through increasingly complicated and distressful world events.

Please reach out to the Ombuds Office if you would like to discuss any issues or learn about the resources that are available to assist the campus.
