The Glorious McAfee Hall Sink

The machine I chose to analyze was a sink. The particular sink I found was located in the first floor bathroom of McAfee Hall. This ceramic white sink has two knobs, one on the right and the other on the left both to adjust the temperature of the water. The machine clearly presents its capabilities to the user by labelling the left knob with a red circle to indicate hot water and the right knob with a blue circle to signify cold water. These pictures are universal for most sinks, so the average consumer would most likely understand how to use this sink.  The user can push both knobs in towards the center to have warm water, push the right knob in to get only cold water, and push only the left knob in to receive hot water. In addition, this sink also has a drain stopper button on top of the faucet that when pushed down, blocks the drain. This allows the consumer to wash things easily by allowing clothes to soak in soapy water instead of the water draining away. I especially like this function because I am able to ensure that my contacts do not fall down the drain when I am putting them in.

Another pro is the height of the sink which comes up to around my waist. For a female college bathroom, these sinks are the perfect height for tall and short girls. In addition, I compared this sink to the other ones on campus, and surprisingly found that this one was the best despite its simple, unassuming design. Although the sink in Lulu seems more tech-savvy with its motion-powered faucet, this sink does not allow the consumer to adjust the temperature which the McAfee sink can do. In addition, the sink at Lulu did not have a drain stopper, but rather just regular drainage holes.

The McAfee sink has a very reliable design, and the only con I found is that the sink dish is shallow, allowing the water to splash up unintentionally if the water is turned on fully. I would propose making the dish less shallow, more deep and closer together instead of spread out sideways like an oval. The form is very much tied with the function, as the shallow dish indicates a place to hold water, so this design was well-mapped. Overall, this sink has great affordances with the labelled handles, simple drain stopper, and suitable height.
