Juice Machine in Pomeroy Dining Hall

unnamedunnamed-1

This machine dispenses fruit juices and is located in Pomeroy dining hall.  The machine has four buttons for four different types of juice.  The machine has a big box on top where the juice is stored.  Then the labels across the middle say which types of juices are options for the user.  Under each label is a flat button that says push where the user is supposed to press to release the juice.  Under the box is an open space with a grate at the bottom.  The grate has four semicircle shapes where a glass could be placed up against so the user knows where to align it.

The affordances of the machine are the grate and the buttons.  The flat grate at the bottom of the machine appears like a good place to set something, specifically a cup or another liquid container.  The semicircles of raised plastic at the bottom appear to be what a glass could hit up against for alignment.  However, if someone is planning on filling up a container other than a glass, those measurements might stop functioning.  The button at the top under each flavor says push clearly.  However, if someone could not read or did not know English they might not be able to understand the button.  This could be fixed by making the button more three dimensional and sticking out of the machine so it becomes more clearly a button.  Again, if a user could not read or speak English the user would not be able to tell what types of juice there are to choose from.  This could be modified if there were images instead of or in addition to the written labels, to clarify the types of juice.

The picture on the top of the machine looks like juice.  Most users would be able to tell that this machine is for use.  It is a cultural assumption that everyone will be able to figure out what this machine does.  The spout underneath the push sign also makes it seem as if something would be coming out there.  The spout coupled with the colorful images of fruit, implies a juice machine.

If the machine is not functioning properly, or one type of juice has run out the machine will not appear to work.  The machine has no way of informing the user if it is out of juice except for when nothing comes out of the spout.  There could be a light or other indicator added that tells the user that a type of juice has run out.
