Physics of Rowing Questions

How do rowers sit in the boat? I’m a little confused as to the position of them in relation to the oars and hull.

I am also a little fuzzy on why it is more efficient to have a seat that is fixed to the hull (a sliding rigger it was called)?

  1. When rowing, either the seat is fixed, or the oars are fixed and the other is on a sliding track. When the oars can move and the seat is fixed there is a good deal less weight that moves against the boat (as would be if the seat moves). However, they can’t allow the two different kinds of boats because it would be unfair in competition. As of now all the boats have sliding seats and it would be too expensive to change over all the boats.
