The instructor puts a broad problem on the board (the environment, people with physical disabilities, etc) From a list of descriptor words, match two and brainstorm a few ideas for inventions that incorporate those descriptors. Pick three words and brainstorm. Ideal in groups!
This helps you think of different designs that accomplish different purposes. The broad problem acts as a focuser that is vague enough to incorporate many ideas.
Some possible Descriptors:
Light Weight, Bulky, User Friendly, Mechanical, Hand-held, Child friendly, Washable (endless possibilities!)

Brainstorms:
Hand operated soda can crusher, Hand Washing timer, A reusable mug, Recycling scanner to tell if something is recyclable, a CO2 tester for smog, a solar powered watch
