Oar Clips Initial Investigation

Our model builds on the pre-existing model with two c-shaped PVC pipes bolted together through the center. When researching materials, we chose silicone rubber to line the inside of the clips. Silicone performs well when wet or dry, and would protect the oars from scratching against the bolts. One product would include two sets of the bolted clips. One clip would go on each end of the oar

We considered including carrying handles in our design, but after researching how oars are held, we found that most rowers carry the oar over their shoulder . We concluded that handles would make the device more cumbersome, rather than being helpful.

We also researched methods of keeping the oars secured inside the clips. Snowboard bindings seem like a practical mechanism. Here is a link to a video demonstrating how to use the binding. We chose the snowboard binding because it is easy to tighten with one hand, and even easier to release the oars. Silicone lining could be used on the inside of the bindings if scratching becomes a concern. These bindings could be secured by bolts on the ends of the clips (as shown in first picture).

To connect the two c-clips to each other, we would use a plastic pitch chain. It looks more sporty than a standard plastic chain, and is waterproof. The function of the chain mainly aims to keep the clips together when they are not being used. The chain could be made detachable using carabiner clips.

Questions to Consider and Test:

  • What should the diameter of the PVC pipe be to fit the oar? How thick should PVC be?
  • Is the chain necessary? Or would it just add weight?
  • What kind of glue will hold silicone to PVC?

  1. I like the idea of using snowboard bindings to adjust the oar clips to fit any size oar! I remember Priscilla rowers usually carry their oars under their arms instead of over the shoulder. Also, instead of using two oar clips connected by a chain which may be heavy, would it be more simple to just use one oar clip in the middle? I remember Priscilla wanting an oar clip with minimal parts.

  2. Great research! I agree with Angela about the snowboard binding being smart, especially with the protective covering. I wonder how heavy the oars are and if something like velcro would be a strong enough lightweight option.

  3. I think the snowboard clips are an innovative idea. Something to consider is how this would work on something with a significantly smaller diameter like the oars.

  4. I love the thought that went into this brainstorming! I definitely think it is important to see how the product reacts in all conditions, especially because rowing involves water, and water can make a huge difference in how materials function. I wonder if there’s an opportunity here to make carrying the oars over the shoulder more comfortable too, perhaps with some outside padding.
