Angela & Calla’s Portable Chair Project!
By Friday 10/14: 3-D print the airplane buckle:http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:318673
By Wednesday 10/19: Have sketch model!
- Test out lawn or beach chairs/backpacks for optimal length of legs & chair back & adjustability
- Priscilla suggested 16-18 inches fixed height
Beach chair investigation:
- Bottom poles screwed into durable square for stability
- Thick double layered canvas fabric with overlap to provide for folding in
- Crossed legs on each side allow easy vertical fold up ( feels like plastic)
- Chair back folds up with seat has three folds
- Research optimal material: light & comfortable
- Materials for prototype: cardboard, fabric, foam, yoga mat material, wood, etc. in Welab
Components of Portable Seat:
- Chair back: foam & fabric
- Chair seat: foam & fabric
- Armrests: cardboard/wood with foam
- Airplane straps: 3-D printed buckle with fabric for straps (might need some sewing)
- Legs: cardboard
- Backpack cover: fabric
** Seat doesn’t have to be functional but size must be appropriate to real life!**
Prototype Design:
After creating the initial small prototype, we figured out how the fabric of the chair seat would fold when the legs folded in. While prototyping we hope to find a way to make the design less bulky and for the chair to avoid hanging too low and reaching the person’s knees. Another concern would be to make the back design comfortable for backpack wearing. We hope to keep these concerns in mind while experimenting to create our life sized sketch model.
I really liked your design. You made it so compact and easy to handle. I love the cape with the pocket. Maybe for the legs a type of telescopic legs that you can adjust the length of the legs via a system that folds into itself would be a possibility?
